Safety and Toxicity CS is claimed to be non-toxic, non-addicting, and to have no known side effects. Unlike silver nitrate, CS can be used safely as a supplement. Drug interactions and allergic reactions are unknown.
Roger Altman, Eng.Sc.D., in an experimental fashion, consumed 2.34mg of silver daily for several months then measured the total silver excreted from his body over a 24 hour period. He concluded that silver is excreted easily from the body, primarily in the urine. It also may explain why there have been no cases of argyria (a permanent blue-gray discoloration of the skin and deep tissues) reported by individuals using low dosage CS.
He also ran a measurement of silver elimination for 100 days following the cessation of silver intake. Initially, most of the silver was eliminated through the urine. He noted that increasing water intake increased silver elimination through the urine. After approximately the first month, silver elimination was greater through the feces than through the urine. He estimated that by the 100 day mark nearly all of the accumulated silver had been eliminated from his tissues.
However, despite the claim of no toxicity, and that it is impossible for silver in this form to accumulate in the body, caution is advised when taking large doses for extended periods of time. The indiscriminate use of silver solutions (apparently always in a form other than CS) has resulted in cases of argyria. The FDA has issued a Final Rule declaring that all over-the-counter (OTC) drug products containing Colloidal silver or silver salts are not recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. This ruling came into force on September 16, 1999. (Please also remember that the FDA approved the use of anti-depressants and pain killers that had to be recalled.)

On the heels of the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the East was rocked again in 1919 with the Indian flu epidemic, unique in that an herbal remedy - ANDROGRAPHIS PANICULATA - halted its spread.
Extract of andrographis has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic (traditional Indian) therapies and Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat common colds and influenza. Last year, researchers at Universities in the UK reviewed seven different studies that had tested the effectiveness of andrographis paniculata.
The UK teams surveyed medical databases, herbal manufacturer information and World Health Organization reports to select seven studies that met the criteria for double-blind, controlled trials. The selected studies used >andrographis< as a treatment for respiratory tract infection in nearly 900 subjects.
As reported in the journal Planta Medica, researchers analyzed three studies that tested doses of 48 to 60 mg of andrographis per day against placebo. Three other studies examined 60 mg of andrographis per day along with a daily dose of Siberian ginseng. The seventh trial had subjects taking 180 and 360 mg of crude andrographis (as opposed to standardized extracts in the other six studies), measured against a medication for common colds.
In all seven of these studies, subjects who took andrographis after the onset of cold symptoms reported faster recovery, compared to subjects who took placebo or the common-cold medication.
Researchers concluded that andrographis may be effective in treating infection in the upper respiratory tract, throat, sinuses and ears. Unfavorable side-effects were insignificant. The researchers also noted that preliminary evidence suggested that andrographis paniculata also had a preventive effect.
In addition to the seven studies mentioned in the UK research, previous laboratory trials have shown that andrographis extract doesn't actually directly kill the organisms that make you sick. Instead, it boosts your immune system and stimulates natural antibodies.
The human body creates some very powerful disease-fighting enzymes. Andrographis protects enzymes, enhancing natural disease-fighting abilities.
The human body heals itself, if not poisoned or starved to debilitation. Nor was it designed to be used as a guinea pig by "Orthodox Medicine," the "Prescription Industry," or "health schills," whose profit margin climbs with the medicine-inflicted death rate. Cold & Flu Busters: The Natural Approach, Part II By Klaus Ferlow, Life-long Herbalist
As an addition to my first article with the same title I did some further research and would like to add on more information how to prevent and treat colds & flu.
In addition to elderberry juice with lemon juice and honey you can also use elderberry extract (sambucol), elderberry tea with a "shot" of elderberry flower syrup (In Canada we can buy it from IKEA, ingredients are juice from wild Swedish elderberry flowers, sugar and citric acid), elderberry tincture from the berries and flowers( sambucu nigra).
Rich in Vitamin A & C, it is very purifying to the lungs and skin.
It promotes perspiration to lower fevers, soothes the nerves and works as a mild laxitive.
Scientific studies report that ingredients extracted from the berries provide the first line of defense against different FLU strains by neutralizing and preventing the replication of different flu strains.
It is a specific detoxifier for COLD, FLU and upper respiratory congestion such as hayfever, sinus, chronic nasal catarrh and spamodic croup.
Clogged ears due to colds respond well to the flowers and both have anti-inflammatory properties to fight arthritis and rheumatic pains. It is also used as an ointment for tumours, burns, cuts, chapping, skin eruptions and inflammations. Also used for night sweats, dropsy (excessive body tissue) and syphilis.
elderberry wine is an old European tradition.
Don't you agree that this is almost a miracle herb?
Another very powerfull ally fighting colds & flu is Grapefruitseed extract= Citricidal (Citrus paradisi), derived from fresh peel of the unsprayed grapefruit and it is anti-microbial, anti-fungal and can be used internally and you can gargle with it. You can also gargle with tea tree oil but have to spit it out.
Furthermore I would like to list a number of other herbs than can be used to prevent and be used in the treatment of COLD & FLU especialy now the media is "jumping" on and putting fear in people's mind with the so-called "Avian or Bird Flu", listing the common and botanical names:

Here is some more interesting information about the miraculous elderberry . I picked from our European elderberry bush the last black elderberries and made another pure elderberry juice to store it for the coming winter.
For centuries, the berry from the elderberry tree has been a popular Gypsy remedy for cold, flu, influenza, and neuralgia.
Finally, there is solid scientific evidence to back up the folklore, thanks to Israeli researcher Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, Ph.D, of Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center.
In 1980 Dr. Mumcuoglu, intrigued by elderberry 's reputation as a cure for colds and flu, did her thesis on the antiviral effects of elderberry . She patented a procedure to isolate the potent disease fighting compounds from elderberry , then tested her extract (Sambucol) on patients in a flu outbreak at Kibbutz
Aza in Israel.
Twenty percent of flu sufferers who used it showed significant relief of fever, muscle aches, sore throat, inflammation, coughing and other symptoms within 24 hours, and another 73 percent felt better after the second day.
In three days, 90 percent were reported complete cured!
Internal uses also for sinusitis, hay fever and bronchitis, external, eczema, boils, dermatitis. In a similar group that received inactive treatment (a placebo) only 16 percent were improved in two days, and it took most of them six days to feel well again.
How does elderberry fight the flu?
Compounds in elderberry bind with viruses before they can penetrate the walls of cells, thereby inhibiting their ability to spread.
Since elderberry is non-toxic when cooked, it is safe even for children.
The hot tea from the flowers and/or juice from the berries promotes sweating, preferably adding in lemon juice and honey and is soothing for the upper respiratory infections, also considered to be anti-rheumatic, laxative and detoxifying.
In ancient times, elderberry trees and bushes were believed to have special mystical properties, and it was considered good luck to plant a tree/bush near your house to protect against disease and evil spirits.
Elderberries are also a good source of vitamins A, B, C.
Cooked berries can be used in pies and jams, as a lemonade and you also can make from the berries a wine. Applied externally as a poultice, useful for burns, rashes, and minor skin problems.
Sambucol also stimulates the immune system and has shown activity in preliminary trials against other viruses, such as Epstein-bar, herpes and even HIV!
Sambucol has just become available in the United States and Canada, and you may be able to find it on the shelves at your health food store or pharmacy.
American Indians use the leaves and flowers in antiseptic wash for skin diseases, and the berries to dye their hair (black) and they dyed the strands of grass they use in their basket designs. Others have used the tea of the leaves as a diaphoretic, the inner bark as a cathartic, the flowers simmered in oil
for sunburn, and steeped in water as a compress for headache. The flowers contain an oil that is used in perfume and cosmetics. Elder flower water can be used as a wash for dry skin or as a cooling wash for the eyes. According to an ancient recipe, washing your face with elderflower water in the morning and at
night (and leaving it there to dry) will remove freckles and morphew (hardened skin).
American Indians used the leaves for pain relief and to promote healing of injuries.
The Legend of the Elder: The elder tree was reputed to be the favourite tree of witches, who supposedly resided in its branches. In the Middle Ages, nearly everyone knew that cutting down an elder tree would incur the wrath of the witches who called it home. There were many tales of angry witches taking vengeance on babies whose unwitting parents put them in a cradle of elder wood.
